SFSPUG – Introduction to Information Architecture

I had the wonderful opportunity to speak at the San Francisco SharePoint User Group last night.  It was held at the Mindjet office, downtown San Francisco, and we had a great group of attendees.

I started the meeting by asking where they would like to start; An Intro to IA or IA Applied to SharePoint.  They chose to start with an Introduction to Information Architecture; which I thought was great.  There were so many fantastic questions, I wasn’t able to get through even a small amount of the presentation.  Though this is somewhat common, I hope everyone felt I was able to add value!

I appreciate the group asking me to come speak and hope they invite me back.  We have a lot to talk about and discover together!

For those who are interested, I have published a PDF version of the presentation here on my blog.  I don’t have all the notes in the presentation complete yet, but I hope it helps someone.  Let me know your thoughts.

  1. I enjoyed your presentation at the SF SPUG. Some of it reminded me of what I had done in creating a Corporate and Benefits Accounting Site in SharePoint 2007. I learned new things to consider when planning like the Dewey Decimal System. It makes me want to pursue learning more about SharePoint 2010. Hopefully I will be able to get another job doing SharePoint.
You had some quick flashes of mapping. Would you please share with me some samples of how you map? I mapped when I created my site due to the complexity of multiple entities and security. But I am still a beginner and am always looking for better ways to improve design and processes.

  2. Hi Marilyn,

I am glad you enjoyed the SFSPUG; I enjoyed it too!
I really don’t have many maps that I can share as most of them contain customer project information; which I am bound by contract to not share.

I would recommend making a suggestion for another SPUG meeting; asking that I demonstrate the tools I used for management, design and architecture.

  3. Hate to be a pain, Bob, but I’m having trouble with the SPMAD – Introduction to Information Architecture download. Getting the following on Mac (Firefox 11, Chrome 18) and Windows (IE 9).
Catchable fatal error: Object of class WP_Error could not be converted to string in /home/content/b/o/b/bobmixon/html/wp-content/themes/ifeature/core/core-functions.php on line 205. Looking forward to seeing it, man. Thanks for the talk, Tuesday.

  4. Hi Buck,

The problem is solved. I changed blog themes and it didn’t like the document attachment. I went back to my old theme and everything worked again.
    Enjoy!

    Bob
