I have to be honest; I wasn’t all that impressed with Microsoft Teams (MS Teams) when it was first released and still tend to avoid using the MS Teams desktop app. I didn’t like the way security is implemented where owners are site collection admins and contributors can edit everything. I also didn’t like the idea of a single unstructured library used for all content associated with a team. There are still things I dislike about MS Teams and there are many bugs that still need to be fleshed out and fixed. However, it’s time to start jumping onto this bandwagon.
With that said, Microsoft has officially announced the retirement of Skype for Business. Their intent is to bring all team members, content and communications into a single holistic user interface (MS Teams Client App). You can read the announcement on the Microsoft Teams blog here.
Since the retirement of Skype for Business isn’t until July 31, 2021 this announcement gives organizations time to transition their user-base.
Skype for Business Online is retiring
As Microsoft Teams has become the core communications client for Office 365, we are announcing that Skype for Business Online will retire on July 31, 2021.
